Use of Wind in Dance Photography

There are times when the right pose needs a bit of energy. That’s when I break out my wind machine. Wind keeps the girls’ hair in motion and creates the effect of movement and excitement.

Being a guy, my go-to wind machine is my electric leaf blower. It’s a bit of a standing joke in the dance studios – all the dads hear that blower start up and they poke their heads around the doorway to see what’s going on. I have to be careful though – the fan I have is pretty powerful, and the girls’ eyes will tear up quickly.

Still, it’s a lot of fun for the girls and we capture some great images. This shot of Carly is a good example. Tight focus and cropping, strong lighting, good pose and a nice position of the eyes in the top right third make for a strong image.
