The Big Move – Transplanting great Senior Pictures to Lakeland Florida

I developed my business in Erie, Pennsylvania, where I lived and worked my entire life. Starting as a Dance photographer, I branched out into family portraits, then senior pictures, then weddings, events and even some commercial work.

But then a new opportunity called. In late 2014, I took a job in Lakeland Florida and picked up my family and moved 1162 miles almost due South.IMG_7632

For the first year, I focused on getting established in my new company and settling into our wonderful new house. I did a bit of scenic work, keeping my skills warm, but none of it was paid work.

But now…I’M BACK!

With a simplified price list and business model, I’m focused on Senior Pictures and maybe a bit of Family Portraits. I won’t be pursing weddings here – I decided that they take up too much of my weekend time, and I’ve spend 30 years away from family and home on Saturdays.

Stay tuned for a teaser of some Lakeland Senior Pictures that I took last summer. I’m starting to learn about all of the great locations in Polk County and the greater Central Florida area for senior pictures.

Amanda’s senior pictures

Another great evening was spent capturing Amanda’s senior pictures. We started at Wintergreen Gorge and took a few nice images, including this shot:

We traveled to downtown Erie and went to one of my favorite locations for a nice image among the bricks:

We headed to the bayfront for some sunny shots, including this image among the posts and birds:

We finished at the beach with this great shot:

Great images, Amanda! There are many more coming in your proofs!

Sydnie’s Erie Senior Pictures in Findley Lake

Once again we had perfect weather for senior pictures. Except for the wind, which finally went away. Otherwise, it was clear, blue and warm.

Sydnie chose Findley Lake as her starting spot, which had a number of spots that were either iconic, photo-friendly, or memorable to her family. Here are a couple of nice shots:

We found some other nice locations as well for her senior pictures.

We meandered over to the Peak and captured some late summer snowboard shots, which is a lot better than capturing midwinter snowboard shots!

And we had to try the golf cart tunnel at dusk, to experiment with some cool lighting!

Great shots, Sydnie! I hope you are pleased with your images!

Senior Pictures in Erie: Kara

Kara’s senior pictures adventure started at Wintergreen Gorge. I have a couple of beat up chairs that I occasionally bring, and this one seemed right for her in this setting.

We had a couple of other great settings for senior pictures in the same location:

Then we headed downtown to some of my favorite city locations. Kara chose a few great graffiti pieces featuring her favorite colors:

Then we headed to the beach. Here’s a great image under a favorite picnic shelter that she had great memories as a kid:

We got a great profile picture with the early evening sun, just before sunset:

For some seniors, Erie senior pictures are not complete with out some sunset beach pictures!

Wonderful images, Kara! I hope you and your family enjoy your senior pictures!

Rebecca’s Senior Pictures in Erie and Harborcreek

Rebecca is an Erie Otters hockey fan. We were able to capture some senior pictures at the Erie Insurance Arena, where they were conditioning the ice for the upcoming hockey season.

We headed up to Penn State Behrend campus for some nice outdoor senior pictures.

IMG_5128 The library wall is a favorite location of mine, as the rock is colorful and natural looking.

Rebecca is also a trumpet player, and was proud to show her trumpet collection and her Harborcreek band uniform.

We finished after sunset at a secret location that had some great light and interesting settings for senior pictures.

Amazing images, Rebecca!

Erie Senior Pictures: Abby

Abby had some specific ideas about her senior pictures. Starting in North East at the railroad museum, we captured some great outdoor images. We headed to the beach and other locations for more senior portraits, hit the zoo for some great “giraffe selfies” and finished indoors after dark.

Abby is a culinary student and plans to study the culinary arts in college. Great senior pictures, Abby!

Erie Senior Pictures: Paige

Summer senior pictures have begun! This week I had a chance to work with Paige, who is the third senior in her family to have their pictures done by John Huegel Photography.

Soft evening light on senior girl

We had perfect weather and stopped at a half dozen locations to capture a wide variety of images.

Here are a few senior pictures from Paige’s session. There are more available in my Facebook business page.

Lake Erie Senior Portraits: Rebecca

Perfect weather for senior portraits tonight. Deep blue skies, 80 degrees, a nice breeze, and no hint of the rain that pounded us earlier today.
Rebecca started in the studio. We captured some really nice indoor images. The first was against a plain black background, and the second against “high key” white:
We matched the colors on her top with some gels in our background light for this interesting image:
Then we shifted to natural light in the studio for this image against one of our brick walls, with the amazing north-facing light we have:
Look at how soft the light is coming from the left. I finished it in a gentle BW/sepia finish.
We ventured outdoors after the studio session, and among other settings, we captured this great image at an incredible Presque Isle sunset:

Lovely images, Rebecca! It was a pleasure working with you!

Erie Portrait Photography: Backdrop Session

This weekend, I hosted Leah and Lydia, who helped me photograph all of my backdrops. Over the years I have collected ten different backdrops, which I use for my indoor photography.

These lovely ladies were great sports. I went through my whole set of drops and they chose clothing which worked with each backdrop color scheme. We kept the session relaxed, and we captured many individual images and also several of them together.

I intend to use the images to create a backdrop sampler for my changing room, so my clients can see and choose the backdrops as they prepare for their sessions.

In post production, I applied one of my favorite soft/warm filters which works great for senior girls.

Thanks ladies, for a great session!
