Church Directory in Erie

We just finished editing and posting a few hundred images from our recent church pictorial directory session this last weekend. We photographed over 50 families and are on our way to building a nice directory for Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church.

This was a slightly more relaxed pace than the dance photography that I am currently doing, but very similar, being indoors and artificially lit. Here you can see a lovely family of four posed against one of my favorite brown backdrops.

We had some time to play around, and we caught some really great images of couples, kids and families.

Thanks to everyone who helped plan this event, and who showed up on this cold winter weekend to have their portraits taken for our new book!

Sunday’s Dance Photos Session is finally online!

Thank You to everyone who brought your lovely dancers to the studio for portraits. We had a very smooth day of shooting. I hope you will enjoy the images.

Printed proofs will be available to view at the studio starting Saturday 2/21.

Dance Studio Photography in Erie

Today we set up and tested for our first 2009 dance studio photography session. It’s exciting to set the lights, line up all the props and toys, and try out a new backdrop.

Here we see Brooklyn with a dynamic pose. We applied my trusty blower to add some motion to her hair.

Lots more dance pictures to be made in the next couple of months. I usually shoot a couple thousand a day when we are in full swing.

Point those toes! Pop that smile!

Sarah Jane

Today was an interesting day for senior images. Sarah and I traveled downtown for some interesting shots in the snow and sunlight, then indoors for some unique high-key and other photos. Then we headed to the fire hall.

Sarah is, among other things, a dancer and a firefighter. We decided to try to capture both in one shot tonight.

Here’s one resulting image. On the back of one of the fire trucks, Sarah is in ballet costume, pointe shoes and wearing her helmet.

Shot using available light and some fill from a camera attached flash and Gary Fong Lightsphere, this image was one of the final shots of the evening. Thanks Sarah for a great senior session. More images will be coming soon!

Erie Dance Consortium – Jenny’s Nightmare

Here is an image from today’s Erie Festival of Dance performance by Paula and Judy’s Dance Connection T.A.P.S. Competition Team. Jenny’s Nightmare is a very interesting performance built around a girl who has a nightmare and is haunted by demons.

The Erie Dance Consortium organizes this event every two years.

This shot is representative of indoor dance photography. Low levels of rapidly changing light and moving bodies make for a challenging setting. This one was shot at ISO1600, f/5.6 and 1/60 second exposure.

I have to commend the lighting team at Mercyhurst College’s Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. They were very creative and tasteful for all of the acts that I saw.
